#ThrowbackThursday…Our First President, Bill Whiddon

#ThrowbackThursday
This week in #ThrowbackThursday we profile Bill Whiddon who was Berowra’s first Club President in 1967. In the early 1950's Bill Whiddon had purchased a piece of land at what would become 28 Berowra Waters Road. He was a builder by trade and first knocked up a garage in which he and his new bride, Alma, lived in while, on weekends, he went about building his new house. It took a lot of Bill’s spare time, favours from friends and hard work but the house was soon complete. Bill also built about a dozen houses in the Berowra district as well as a number in Hornsby and right across Sydney. He also built shops in both Asquith and Hornsby. Bill was also heavily involved in the Freemasons in Pymble, near where…

#ThrowbackThursday
This week in #ThrowbackThursday we profile Doug McKinnon. According to known records Doug holds the honour of Berowra's first Life Member. After retiring from North Sydney Bears in 1962, Doug was living in Berowra when he met local builder Bill Whiddon, through playing cricket at Berowra Oval. In Doug's own words, the pair "soon became good friends mainly through his tragic support of the North Sydney RLFC with whom I had played until a couple of years before." In 1967 Bill first proposed the idea of forming a rugby league club in Berowra at a time when it was largely unheard of. Following an inaugural meeting at the district hall the Berowra Junior Rugby League Football Club was formed with Bill Whiddon as President, Doug as Secretary and Johnny Hoy as…

#ThrowbackThursday
This week in #ThrowbackThursday we step back 40 years to take a look at Berowra's 1977  A'Grade team! We're told the 1977 A' Grade team had a real commitment to training, fitness and being competitive with every other team. When wet nights forced the team off the oval, road runs were the favored training session and there were very few hills in Berowra that the players didn't spend plenty of time exploring. The team was built on strong team harmony, culture and friendship and attracted several new players including Scott McLeod, Phil Robinson, Geoff Warren and Peter Bowles. The forwards were led by the likes of Dave Abel and Keith Campbell while the backs were served well by Kim Blackburn and Greg King.   1977 was also the last year the…
